Cahill (2020) writes, “Given that drama educators chiefly employ collaborative learning methods, it can be readily argued that their classes provide a particularly rich opportunity to enhance the social and emotional capabilities of their students. In addition, the drama class can also provide opportunity for enquiry into the human condition, via its study of character, context story and the dynamic of human interaction” (p.60).

It is timely that we reflect on the power of drama to enhance wellbeing and reclaim human connections for both our students and our staff.

This full day workshop is broken into three components:

Workshop 1:

This workshop will be delivered by the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP).
 
ATYP is the national youth theatre company. They exist to connect young people with the professional theatre industry locally, regionally and nationally, drawing the industry together to communicate the impact of involving young people in the arts. There is now an irrefutable body of evidence demonstrating how participation in theatre offers significant benefits to young people in areas including wellbeing, resilience, educational outcomes, community participation and belonging.
This workshop will focus on the impact drama and theatre participation has on student mental health and wellbeing.

Workshop 2:

This workshop will be delivered by Milkcrate Theatre.
Milkcrate Theatre is the leading arts organisation in Australia working in the unique intersection of the arts, homelessness, mental health, and disability, providing professional development pathways and opportunities for collaborative artists to engage in creative practices as both performers and theatre and film creators of works.
This workshop will focus on ways drama can be utilised to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the whole community.

Compassionate Witnessing Circle:

This teacher wellbeing practice will be conducted by Youth Off The Streets.
Youth Off The Streets is a not-for-profit youth organisation. They work with young people, their families and communities to create safety, offer support and provide opportunities to build a positive future. Their services include six registered and accredited independent high schools, homelessness and housing services, youth justice support and life skills programs.
In this session, Youth Off The Streets will facilitate a Compassionate Witnessing Circle to open conversation and connection with your colleagues around teacher wellbeing in the drama space.
